DAYS IN THE GARDEN - Make A Soaker Hose

Another great "re-purpose" gardening idea. Take a worn out (or one that has too many holes) water hose and give it a 2nd life. I know I've run over the ends of at least three in the last season! Plug one end of the hose with a wooden dowel, PVC putty or other method. Next perforate the hose randomly with a sharp nail. Screw in the hose to a faucet and turn on low - a great soaker hose is born!

It may seem like common sense but even I forget this tip sometimes....When you need to spray any type of yard chemical, choose a day with little or no wind. Work backwards so you don't walk through (and then track) the chemcials into cherished areas.

Pinching your plants will produce more flowers and greenry. Annuals such as impatiens and herbs thrive and grow into bushier adult plants. Use pinching to shape your plants as well an encourage new blossoms.

DAYS IN THE GARDEN - Buying Annuals

Annuals should be purchased in compact, multi-stemmed plants. Avoid leggy, single stemmed ones. The compact ones will promote large, more colorful plants.

DAYS IN THE GARDEN - Create A Moat

Create a "moat" around the base of newly planted plants to help collect water. New plants tend to need more water than established plants and this will help them through days when there is no rain.

DAYS IN THE GARDEN - Labeling Your Seedlings

A great way to label your new seedlings, herbs and be earth-friendly at the same time!

Take an old set of mini blinds and snip the slats into 8 inch lengths. Use a Sharpie to write the name of the plant and stick the slat into the ground.  No more faded popscile stick tags!
