Thinking Thursday - Things you didn't know about couponing

Today's Thinking Thursday is just a few couponing tips I learned from Southern Savers Extreme Couponing Workshop back in April:

  • Read the fine print on your coupons. Manufacturers put the most expensive item's photo on the coupon, but it may not be the one you have to buy to use the coupon.
  • Jenny at www.southernsavers.com doesn't list everything in a store's sale flyer - she only posts the items that are on sale at their lowest price in it's cycle.
  • You are legally able to only print two (2) copies of a printable online coupon. Each coupon is tracked in it's code.
  • When shopping with a $/$$ coupon ($5 off $25), use it first before your other coupons to ensure you meet the minimum purchase.
  • Your local IGA or local grocer is the best place to buy meats, and the cheapest. They use their meat prices to get you into the store. Publix has the most expensive meat in the Southeast.
  • Buying store brands or shopping at Wal-mart does NOT beat shopping Publix or Ingles B1G1 sales with coupons.

Thinking Thursday: Create Your Own Wedding Table Number Stands

Looking for ways to save money in your wedding budget? Here's an easy way to make your own table number stands for guest tables. Why rent or buy these when you can make them!

All you need are: Wooden dowels, wooden wheels, wooden clothes pins, glue and spray paint. All these items can be found at your local Hobby Lobby or craft store. There is an aisle that is dedicated to unpainted wooden craft supplies. For Step-by-Step instructions with photos, visit http://www.thekendalcompanies.com/DIY-Projects.html

Thinking Thursday - Make your own wedding paper petal tossing cones

These are a great alternative to those expensive tulle bags or gift favor boxes.
After searching multiple websites and a ton of stores trying to find these cute cones, all I could find were ones made of tin or ones that were too expensive. I decided it was easier, much more versitile and MUCH more cost efficient for me to make my own cones. I can change the size, color, even texture of the cones I need to suit each event's theme. I can even run them through the printer to add couples names, dates or little sayings on the inside. Sometimes I add a monogram on the outside too! This is a great project for you and your bridesmaid's to do together. They are also great for holding treats such as popcorn, candy or other sweets for your guests. The trick is to use the correct template for the type of cone you are trying to make.

Sunday Night is for SHOPPING! or not........

Recycled Post from November 2009:

Twice a year I impose a "no-buy" period to clean out my pantry, fridge and freezer.  Here's how it works and how YOU can do it with me:

We are going to clear out our pantry, fridge and freezer - all without lifting a hand! Starting TODAY, we are not going to go to the grocery store. Not for meat, not for fresh veggies, not for bread. Don't look at me like I am crazy - NOTHING this week. Use what you have for meals. Pull out that frozen roast. Eat up the last of that head of lettuce. Put together meals from canned items in your pantry. Be creative. Next week you can add milk, meats and veggies from the store, but for one whole week, use what you already have (NO, you can't just eat out every night this week!) This process clears out the fifteen cans of green beans and your stock pile of almost-out-dated frozen items. You will be surprised what you can create AND you will be de-cluttering without any effort. Try to do this for two full weeks (or three if your pantry is stuffed full.) Make it a game with the kids. I do this in my own home twice a year. My neighbor knows when I am doing this when she opens the fridge for a drink and all we have is two jars of pickles and a stick of butter!

Before I started:

My pantry after Week One of the "Purge"

At the end of the 2 weeks, without lifting a finger, your fridge, freezer and pantry will be clean AND you will have a jump-start on your New Years Resolutions (the same ones from LAST YEAR) without even realizing it!

- You saved money buy not buying more groceries
- You reduced your waste by eating up what was left in your fridge

- and, if you let your kids create the meals this week, you've lost weight!

Before you head off to the store to restock, go through what is left. Throw out any out-dated items, pull anything you won't ever use (donate it!) and make a list of what you REALLY need to replace. Don't go out and buy three kinds of salad dressing and two kinds of jelly unless they are something you use on a daily basis. Flour, cornmeal and spices cook best when fresh. Wait until you are planning to use a staple good before you buy it. AND USE A COUPON!

$TIP - Coupons used to a real pain to use. First you had to search through the flyers, cut out what you wanted, somehow keep them organized so you didn't drop the on the grocery store floor, hassle with the lady at the register -all for what? To save $2 on something you probably wouldn't have regularly bought? Things have changed! There are websites out there that do it all for you. They tell you where the coupons are, where the best deal can be found and when an item is on sale that you already have a coupon for! Before you head to the grocery store, surf the web and find great websites that do all your coupon research for you. Sites like Southernsavers.com and Couponmom.com are local and pull from your area's grocers and pharmacies. It saves you the time AND money! Some websites offer local workshops that will even bring you all the coupons along with a shopping list to guide you!

While the shelves are empty, clean your fridge, freezer and cabinets really well with soap and water, wipe the bottoms of all the jars going back into the fridge and organize restocked pantry items by type.

TIP: Keep a notepad in the kitchen for when you run out of something. You don't really need a master list (we are trying to keep it simple remember?). When you use the LAST drop of oil or salt (or shampoo), or you are down to 2 eggs, jot it on the list. Use the list when you go shopping so you don't overbuy or forget something you need!

GREEN TIP: To cut down on multiple cleaning products (and reduce your packaging waste) AND help reduce water pollution, I use a product called Basic H2 by Shaklee Corp. (www.ShakleeGetClean.com) . One bottle of concentrate creates three different products, depending on how much you dilute it with. You can make window cleaner, an all-purpose cleaner and a degreaser.

REASON THIS HELPS YOU WITH YOUR CLUTTER:The fridge, freezer and food pantry are places that you and your family look at every day, sometimes several times a day. Anyone who cooks, makes a snack, or gets a drink -unconsciously takes in the cluttered view. Having to move items around to search for a can of peas or not being able to find it when you KNOW it's there, is irritating and a time waster. By keeping your kitchen orderly, it puts you and your family in an "orderly" state. It reduces stress you don't even realize is there. You may even find yourself so at ease, that you apply this mission to other areas, such as your medicine cabinet or cleaning product cabinet (hint, hint!) You also cut down on added food, personal care, office supplies and cleaning product expenses. How many times have you bought peanut butter, paper clips or Glass Plus only to get home and find you already have three of each!?

Cute Valentines Day Butterflies and Alien Class Swap Cards!

Sweet Butterflies and Creepy Alien Valentine Day Class Swap Cards...
Easy and INEXPENSIVE!

Spend a morning with your young ones creating these sweet cards for their class party. Share pictures of your finished product and post them
here in the comments section!

This is my daughter's project from last year, but it turned out so cute I thought I'd post it for you guys this year! SO SIMPLE!

Supplies:
Pink and Lime Green Construction Paper
Scissors
Red Pipe Cleaners
Glue or Glue Dots, Stapler
Markers
Optional: Google eyes, stamps, stickers, punches

I cut out "fat" hearts for the girl's butterflies and "skinny" hearts for the boy's aliens.

Grace stamped the butterflies with more hearts and used a butterfly punch to add more details but you can let your kids decorate them however they like (or whatever supplies you already have on hand!)

She then used a single glue dot to piece the two butterfly "wings" together in the middle.

I helped her curl the antenas for the butterfly and alien by wrapping the pipecleaner around my finger.

Then she stapled them to the top of each card and there you have it - easy as pie!

For a slide show of photos showing Grace making these step-by-step, visit my Valentine's Day page at www.thekendalcompanies.com

The $1 Challenge

Challenge -
Keep a zip lock bag or plain envelope in your purse or car. Every time you get a dollar bill in change back, put it in an envelope. When you get $50, put it in your savings account. In a year's time, you'll be surprised how much you have saved!

A local radio talk show host does this with every $5 bill he gets, but I think I'll start with $1 bills!

Ingles Receipt Breakdown - SAVED $109.65!!

Ingles -
There is no way I can type out my entire receipt, but rest assured it was a good week for me. NOTE: If you have been clipping for awhile make sure you check next week's sales THIS WEEKEND on http://www.southernsavers.com/. The majority of coupons out right now expire on the last day of the month which is next Wednesday. PLAN AHEAD as most coupon clippers will be out trying to use these up and some products may sell out before you can get to them. Publix new sales start on Wed. as well....keep it in mind!

Coupons Used : 57.95
Doubled Coupons :15.60

Revisiting Coupon Organizing Methods

In getting ready for Southern Savers.com Coupon Workshop here in Cartersville on March 27th, I'm going to repost some of my past coupon shopping break-downs and shopping post. This post is originally from December 2010

When I first found www.southernsavers.com back in October, I was overwhelmed with the amount of time and energy it took for me to organize my coupons. I read several different blogs, including Jenny’s at Southern Savers and found that although everyone has their own favorite way to organize, there are really four main methods:

1. The “stuff it all in an envelope” Method
2. The Expanding File Method 3. The Notebook Method
4. and the No Cut Method
While I’ll let Jenny give you the “how-to’s”, I will give you my testimonial.

Believe it or not, I did start with the “envelope” method. I had a main envelope that I tried to keep in order according to products (dairy, cleaners, etc.) Then I had an envelope for each store (CVS, Ingles, etc). Each week as Jenny posted her lists, I would pull from the main envelope and place the coupon I needed in the appropriate store envelope. Problem was that, as time went on, I acquired too many coupons and it was a mess! I couldn’t keep with what was expiring and sometimes I would see unadvertised specials in the store and not have my main envelope!

So I advanced to the expandable file method – actually it was the DELUXE model! I purchased a hard index card file that resembled the card catalogs in the library (when I was young they had actual FILE CABINETS with card indexes, not computers!)

This worked much better. I created file tabs for each product division then put the files in order of the store isles. I created separate files for specific store coupons (such as Extra Care Bucks) and kept the coupons in each file with the newest dated one in the back. I felt a little weird carrying this thing in and it was awkward to navigate in the store – but it was better than the envelopes!

Finally, after seeing many women with their fine nice zip-up notebooks – I moved on up again.

I bought the notebook (regular priced $19.99) on sale for $12, the trading card sleeves and divider tabs for a total of $21 – but used my Staples Rewards coupon ($15) and only paid $6 out of pocket. It took TWO days to change over the coupons. Each sleeve represents an isle in the grocery store I frequent the most. Each coupon product has its own place, with the oldest coupon on top. I love it! I can scan each page to see if there are any expiring coupons and mark them with a sticky tab. When I go to the store, I use the cart with the kid’s extra seat and it fits perfectly.

After using this method for a couple of weeks, I feel much more organized. Having the notebook that zips up and has a handle on the binding is great. Nothing falls out. Nothing gets wet. Everything is easy to file.

So now, I’m thinking…..should I try to the no-cut method now that I have all my “cut” coupons organized? Maybe I should have listened to Jenny adn STARTED with this method? LOL!

I have to say the only thing that is keeping me from changing is that I like to have ALL my coupons with me when I shop. I hate to be in Publix, find an unadvertised sale and NOT have the coupon…..Guess I’ll have to think on that one a little more.

Now, tell me……what method do you use and why?

Now that my life is somewhat back in order I have actually had the time to update my coupon organizer and hit the coupon shopping circuit again! I know my regular readers have been waiting, so I went ahead and did some end-of-the-week shopping today. Don’t worry, I will do my regular sale shopping tomorrow night and post it as well. I was more than a little upset at my new local CVS this afternoon. After planning my shopping trip, I arrived at CVS to find they had already pulled this weeks yellow sale tags. I depend on these to help me find the sales products that I have pulled coupons for to make sure I get the right sale product. I had to take the actual flyer and go row by row. I ended up getting frustrated and leaving without shopping the entire store. I did end up with some great finds. Since the sales will change in the morning, it won’t help you much, but I wanted to get a refresher on breaking down my receipts for you.

Why Worry Wednesday? Eat From Your Pantry Challenge

Back in November, I put my coupon saving shopping on hold in order to clean out my pantry and freezer. A couple of weeks later, I was still going. It's now been 6 WEEKS and I still have not shopped for more than a handful of perishables - even over the holidays! Aren't you proud of me? I have had to pass on TONS of coupons and I am more than ready to start using the new ones I've collected in my great new organizer, but after reading MamaFish's Challenge and taking stock of my pantry and freezer, I think I can go at least a couple of more weeks before we start eating plain pasta and oatmeal. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, take a minute to read my previous blog and then read Money Saving Moms Challenge. If you are short on time, the basics can be found in Step One of my Simple Life Series.

Wednesdays in the Simple Life Series are for YOUR CLUTTER (and yes, it multiplies in my home too). I will let you know what I am doing to make simple changes in my own home to clear out my clutter. I hope you follow along and try some of these steps yourself. Please let me know how you are coming along by leaving comments at the bottom of each post. Tell me what works, what doesn’t, if you are bored – whatever – we are learning and growing together.
